Your Ego Will Either Make Or Ruin You
Watch how you use your ego
You need an ego, but you also can’t be delusional.
If it weren’t for that I would have quit my first job and been some bum who never learned sales, found my mentor or built the foundation that I needed to start my business and made 10’s of thousands I did in high school.
The reason so many people are bums today, have no money, live below their wants, etc, is because they think so highly of themselves. There’s so many people in our lives and especially online who are so broke and dumber than a rock but they won’t hop in their car or bike and do some food delivery, wait some tables, do sales, etc because they think they’re too good for that. And it’s like “no, you aren’t, there’s $300 in your account, you’re broke.”
Or some people start a sales job or something commission based where they can make good money if they put in the work, give up the short term money for the long term but they can’t look 1 month into the future. They’re so focused on the short term money. That’s why so many people are poor. They lack long term thinking on top of having this crazy ego.
The first person I hired was a moron. I told him if he wanted to have anything remarkable in life he’s gotta give up the short term money and pleasures and focus on building a life worth living. His response was “I’ll focus on the longterm later, I just want money now.” He got fired a few days later for being an idiot and for asking for much more than he was worth. And last I heard of him, he’s doing whatever drugs he can get his hands on. And broke.
There’s a reason for that. He was too focused on the pleasures, not even the long term pleasures like a nice car but the really short term pleasures like quick dopamine form scrolling and sitting around with his meat in his hand.
Low key that was a rant but seriously who do you wanna be, someone who cares more about 1 year from today or someone who cares more about the moment? And if you are more of a momentary person, that’s ok, you can change that. I use to be one too until realizing it’s literally a skill and that it can be changed.
The first thing is you just need to want the longterm benefits more than the short term benefits, or first understand the difference. You need to be disciplined and be able to delay gratification. Nothing good happens over night. But it starts overnight. Instant fix, later reward.
So what do you want? Or a better question, what do you not want? That’s how you’re gonna get the answer. You don’t wanna be homeless? Then be so rich that no matter what happens you can always afford a home cash. You don’t wanna die a nobody? Then do something so big on such a large scale, something that will impact people generations to come. Like a Hitler, or Jesus.
No one living a life worth wanting is living in the moment. Very big exceptions to the rule, like multi-multi millionaires who get to enjoy their lives after selling their company but they still went through the longterm process. And kids of the ultra rich who just party and have no purpose hate their lives we hear them say in interviews.
And the people who seem to come into instant success who you see party all the time, end up losing that life later on. Funniest example is David Dobrik’s vlog squad. David made his bag and left his whole group irrelevant. Or rappers who get too involved in the lifestyle, there’s so many people who seem like they’re living the dream (and they are, right now) but through pleasures which don’t last forever.
The big part of this is honestly ego, I always say to have an ego, but an inward ego and to hold yourself to high standards. But if you had a big moment like a big win in business, status, or just had more back then but its now failed and you lost all your money, respect, etc, you are at 0. Not where you peaked, but where you are now. Let go of the past, focus on the future. And I know what it’s like, that happened to me.
Some advice if you’re broke, start something. Because you are blessed to be at 0 regardless of how you got there. Extra points if you’re living at home or failed at something because you have a very good starting point. And if you’re not living at home for free and need money, go wait some tables, deliver some food, do freelancing, sell some junk, work part time etc. But do something to help with your ultimate goal.
But by no means should we be broke, bums, or losers and think of ourselves as important, or high status or anything else that we used to be or want to be. Yes, view yourself as these positive things because you get what you think, but thats only the first half, the second half is actually doing the work to get there. Like creating content, knocking on doors, cold calling, writing, working, etc.
You will not start with your best thing, neither have I, but you will experience an incredible j curve by focusing on building for the future, and having an inward ego.
Which is by,
Letting go of your (maybe ridiculous) ego
Thinking long term
Having something big to work towards
